Sed-Gyued History

It is well known that Tibetan Buddhism had been bifurcated into four major sects, the reformed and latest of which is the Gelukpa sect. It was founded by Je-Tsong-Khapa in the 14th Century and all the previous Dalai Lamas including the present, H.H. The Dalai Lama XIVth, followed his teachings and traditional practices thoroughly.

Je-Tsong-Khapa preached both Sutras and Tantras to his disciples. Sutras are teachings of Lord Buddha to the monks as well to general lay people. Tantras, on the other hand, are secret teachings which Lord Buddha taught to nearest disciples through direct communication.

H. E. Jetsun Sherab Senghe, who was an eminent disciple of Je-Tsong-Khapa, established the Sed-Gyued Monastery in Tibet. Later he handed over the monastery to his disciple H. E. Dhol-Nag-Palden Songpo. The monastery became the main seat of secret Tantric Buddhist University in future.

Transmission

Sed-Gyued Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is based on empowerment, Oral Transmission and Conceptual Meditation Tradition of Guyasamaja, Heru-Kawa and Yamantaka popularly known as Sang-De-Jigsum in Tibet. H. H. The Dalai Lama (First) Jey Gedun-Drupa was inner disciple of H. E. Jetsun Sherab Sengye.

Je-Tsong-Khapa arranged his teaching of Guyasamaja in the year 1419 at Sera-Chhoding, there are so many disciple attended to received his teaching, when the teaching is over Je-Tsong-Khapa took the text of Guyasmaja, (Delpa-Sheedag) on his hand and ask to all his disciple attending the teaching, "I am going to handover the text to any one among all of you to continue the teaching of Guyasamaja in future. Is anybody willing to take this responsibility voluntarily?" he asked the mass gathering twice but no one responded. However, at the third call, one of his disciples named Jetsun Sherab Sanghe stood up and volunteered to take the responsibility and took the text to continue the teaching of Guyasamaja (Delpa-Sheedag). At the same moment, Je-Tsong-Khapa predicted a seat for his disciple Jetsun Sherab Senghe at a place called Yak-shi in Western Tibet.

The great saints or masters of Tantric teachings like Jamyang Ghedunphel, Gyuedchen Tashi Phagpa, Penchen Samdup Gyaltso, Gyuedchen Tsondu Phagpa, Gyuedchen Dorjee Sangpo, Gyuedchen Sangye Gyaltso, Gyuedchen Kunchok Gyaltso and Gyuedchen Kunchok Yarphel were some of the most prominent Buddhist Tantric philosophers and masters emerging from the Sed-Gyued Monastery of Tibet.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sed-Gyued Monastery

"Sed-Gyued Monastery, Salugara, is the main seat of the Sed-Gyued lineage or whispered lineage. Whispered lineage is a secret teaching transmitted only to the closest disciple through direct communication with their root teacher or meditational deity ... It is because of the unbroken secret teachings of Sed-Gyued lineage and commentaries that the Tibetan secret Mahayana practice is intact today ... The purpose of Sed-Gyued Monastery is to preserve and promote the unique tantric study, practice, experiences and culture of this lineage, as well as the subsequent lineage holders and Sed-Gyued masters ... I appreciate and admire Sed-Gyued Dorjee Chang Jampa Wangyal Rinpoche for his tireless effort to preserve the Sed-Gyued tradition. I wish and pray for the better establishment and further development of Sed-Gyued Monastery.”
